Nancy, 1am on December 30th.  We just checked into the hospital and are ready to begin.  Our journey to the hospital actually began at 12:15am when, 20 minutes after going to bed, Nancy's water broke.  No sleep for us for some time to come!

1:30pm and Nancy is about to start pushing.  The Pitocin has been dripping for a few hours, the epidural is in, the monitors are all hooked up and mostly working, and we (Nancy, I, and the nurses) feel confident that this will be over soon.

Pictures omitted involving forceps, the baby extraction vacuum, and the crazed mom who was getting in four pushes per contraction despite near exhaustion.

Nancy, 6:10pm on December 30th, about to have Madeleine via c-section after 3.5 hours of hard pushing!

6:17pm on December 30th, Madeleine moments after birth.  Her first digital picture. (I took a regular 35mm shot first. So much for the digital age!)

Nancy, at 6:21pm on December 30th, sees her brand new daughter for the very first time.  After this brief glimpse, Nancy won't see Madeleine again until after 9pm.

Madeleine wrapped up and on her way to the nursery after her brief visit with mom.

6:27pm and it is time for Madeleine to be weighed for the very first time.  Madeleine, like her mother, does not like to step on the scale in front of others!

Madeleine and dad, who has obviously been up for the last 36 hours or so.  Dad was so tired, he didn't bother to ask how his aunt, cousin, and mother-in-law managed to get Madeleine out of the nursery without either Nancy or I being informed.  I just walked out into the hallway after making some calls to find them there taking turns holding the baby!

Madeleine and Aunt Mary.  Watching her hold Madeleine, you could tell she is a professional.  Mary and her daughter Catherine were at the hospital from 2:15pm until late into the evening.

Madeleine and Nancy's mom, Brigitte.  Brigitte and her sister Renate were at the hospital from 4:00pm until well after midnight.

Madeleine and her cousin Catherine Frazier who, I am told, was hogging the baby while I was off with Nancy in the recovery room.
