Madeleine turned one year old on December 30, 2002.  We had a big party for her at our house on the 29th.

On her birthday she went in for her one year doctor's appointment where she weighed in at 19lbs 8oz and was measured at 32 inches tall.

Since "Blue's Clues" is Madeleine's favorite show, the guest cake for the party featured Blue.

A second cake for Madeleine came from Safeway.  Later pictures show what became of this cake.

Here Madeleine surveys the many presents she received at her party.  She has a small present in hand, which she carried around for quite some time.

Once the party started and the guests arrived, everybody headed in to see the presents.  Here you can see Kayla, Nancy, Madeleine, Jane (Kayla's mom), the back of cousin Lauren, and aunt Ann's arm.

The little package that Madeleine held on to for so long had a nice golden bracelet in it from Grandpa Paul and Grandma Emily.  Madeleine learns young that good things come in small packages.

Lunch was ready before the presents were done, so Madeleine got a little bit of quiet time with the presents.

Being a polite little girl, she was interested in opening the cards before opening the gifts.

One of Madeleine's gifts was a birthday hat from Aunt Renate.

Cousin Jack enjoys the hospitality of the house, borrowing Madeleine's high chair for his meal.  Jack is 6 weeks older than Madeleine.

Kayla and Lauren were interested in our cats.  Here they are trying to coax Felix out from under the bed.

Later, Kayla found out that the best way to get Felix to come over to you is to sit down on the couch.  Felix believes that anybody seated on the couch is there to pet him.

Lauren also tried out Madeleine's saucer, though it appears to be a couple sizes too small for her.

Madeleine got her turn in the high chair once Jack was done.  Here Jack says thank you for the use of the high chair.

Eventually the time for cake came. "Happy Birthday" was sung for Madeleine and her very own cake was set before her.

Later, a slice of cake was put on her tray, and she became fully involved with the cake.

Cake all over!  In our hair and everywhere!

Ooooooh... that was some good cake!

Washed off and peering around looking for more fun after the cake. Madeleine needed a serious scrub after she was done with the cake.  Even after that, she still needed a bath to get the rest of the frosting out of her hair!

That evening, after her bath and once she was in her jammies, Madeleine wore her hat for a little while longer while she played with dad.
